After achieving a thrilling win against Canada in the opening match of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the USA is set to face Pakistan in the second match of the tournament. Thursday’s match will be Pakistan’s first match of this edition.
USA Cricket Team co-captain Aaron Jones expressed his confidence in the team in an April interview with USA TODAY, adding that the current squad is “very strong” and all the players have the same dynamic. Jones was awarded Man of the Match in the opening game after scoring 94 runs off 40 balls.
“One thing that I think is really strong for us is that we have players from all over the world,” Jones said at the time. “And you can use that as something that really becomes a strength for us.”
Jones added that all the players on the team are always open to sharing input and insight regarding the strengths and weaknesses of their colleagues.
“We have a really good unit,” he said.
Although the tournament marked the USA’s debut in T20 cricket, Pakistan had previously won the T20 World Cup in 2009 and reached the final in the previous edition in 2022, losing to England in the final match.
Pakistan team captain Babar Azam, in a statement, said that he and his team are “very confident going into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.”
“Now it is my goal and career target to win the T20 World Cup and present the title to the passionate people of Pakistan, who have always stood behind us like a rock in the good and not so good days,” Azam said.
On Wednesday, one day before the match, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced that Imad Wasim would not play the match as “he has been advised rest by the PCB Medical Team,” due to ongoing discomfort in his right rib cage.

The US will face Pakistan on Thursday, June 6 at 11:30 ET at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
